The Cat's Nap

That cat is lying on my lap right now.

I tap the keyboard very carefully, afraid of waking it from its rest — though it has slowly grown used to the faint sound of the membrane keys and no longer, as it did at first, lifts its little head every time I press one. Even now its ears still swivel left and right like radar, tracking the movement of my hands. When it hopped onto my lap I was reading, and far from being annoyed at the interruption, I was pleased. This cat has never been close to my family, perhaps because it’s never allowed to run into the rooms, or because whenever it’s deemed naughty or in the wrong it gets a few light taps on the head. Small a punishment as that is, a cat is bound to be afraid; but with me it’s far more “brazen.” When it came onto my lap, it restlessly gnawed at my fingers, and only after finding my skin rough and thick — no delicacy to be had — did it, a little dispirited, resign itself to being stroked. I meant to hold the book in my left hand and tease it with my right, savoring this heavenly pleasure, but my eyes couldn’t stop being drawn to it. So although I skimmed a dozen pages, my mind stayed empty, and I gave up. Yet the moment I put the book down, it lost all interest in playing with me: first it twisted itself into a knot, cocked up a little foot and licked the fur on its rump for a while, then set the leg down and at once became a perfectly round white ball of fur. I truly couldn’t bear to disturb it, my mood for reading was thoroughly spoiled, and my phone was a world away (I can’t get through a book without throwing the phone aside) — luckily the laptop on the desk still had some charge left, so I decided to write about this little creature.

A white ball of fur it may be, but on its head it carries a heart-shaped patch of pale grey; just as it falls asleep, this is also the only part of its body that stays still, while everything else — the curled legs, the tail, the back bent into a C — rises and falls a little. The motion begins slowly between the back and the neck, then ripples across to the back like water, and on to the curled legs. I can’t find anything quite like it, but a strange image keeps surfacing in my mind — a white heart. It isn’t a perfect fit, but if you slowed a heartbeat tenfold, their movements might well look much the same.,咩咩咩咩咩咩咩咩咩咩咩咩吗 &》,

The cat woke up, and jumped onto my keyboard.
